Search for “Kling vs Runway” and you get ten articles that all assume the same thing: these are two competing products and you have to pick one.

That assumption hides the more useful question, and the answer splits on one thing most comparisons never ask: are you a creator working in an app, or a developer building on an API? Because those two people get completely different Runways. Runway’s consumer app already bundles Kling 3.0 into its $12/month plan — a creator can use both from one subscription. Runway’s API, the thing a developer builds on, doesn’t carry Kling at all. And Kling’s own developer API starts at a $700 prepaid package that expires in 180 days.

So “which is better” is the wrong question. The real one is which channel matches how you’ll actually use it — and the price tags for the two channels aren’t even comparable. This article works through that with prices pulled from both vendors’ own pages on July 21, 2026.

One scope note up front: this is a comparison of channels and cost, not of output quality. The short answer

First decide whether you’re building on an API or working in an app — the two paths barely overlap. If you’re a developer who needs Kling behind an API, Runway is not an option: Runway’s developer API doesn’t carry Kling. Your two real routes are Kling’s own API, which starts at a $700 prepaid package with a 180-day expiry (a $98 / 1,000-unit trial exists but expires in 30 days), or an aggregator that meters the same Kling endpoints pay-as-you-go at roughly a 15% markup over Kling’s list rate, with no commitment. If you’re a creator who just wants to use Kling in a UI, Runway’s $12/month consumer plan bundles Kling 3.0 alongside Runway’s own models — the cheapest way to touch Kling, but not something you can build a product on.

Kling vs Runway comes down to one thing: app vs API

Runway sells two different products, and the top-ranking comparisons blur them into one. On Runway’s pricing page there’s a toggle at the top: Runway Creative and Runway Dev. They are not the same offer, and Kling lives in only one of them.

Runway Creative is the consumer app. Its Standard plan — $12/month billed annually, $15 month-to-month — lists Kling 3.0 right alongside Runway’s own Gen-4.5, and Pro and Max add Seedance 2.0. So if you’re a creator who wants to generate with Kling inside a web app, Runway is genuinely one of the cheapest doors to it. That’s a real and underreported fact.

Runway Dev is the API — the thing a developer imports and builds on. Its published rate card lists gen4.5, gen4_turbo, aleph2, act_two, veo3.1, seedance2, happyhorse_1_0, and gemini_omni_flash. The string “Kling” does not appear anywhere on it. You cannot call Kling through Runway’s API.

This is where most “Kling vs Runway” articles quietly mislead. They see “$12/month includes Kling 3.0” and tell developers that’s the easy path — but that price belongs to a UI subscription, not an API you can integrate. A developer who benchmarked Kling and wants it behind their own product has exactly two API routes, and Runway is neither: Kling’s own developer API, or an aggregator that resells Kling’s endpoints. The $12-versus-$700 gap that looks so dramatic is really a consumer app priced against a developer API — two different things wearing the same brand names.

One thing we could not pin down and won’t guess at: even for the Creative app, Runway bills in credits, and we could not obtain the credits-per-second rate for Kling inside Runway without an account. So we can confirm Kling 3.0 is included in Standard; we cannot tell you its effective per-second cost there.

What Kling’s own API actually costs to start

Kling’s developer pricing is built around prepaid unit packages, not metered billing. One unit lists at $0.14.

Before the $700 commitment, then, the real floor is the $98 trial — but the 30-day clock makes it a testing budget, not a production one. The $700 package is where sustained use starts, and it deserves arithmetic rather than adjectives. Kling 3.0 at 1080p without native audio bills at 0.8 units per second, or $0.112/s. So $700 buys 6,250 seconds — about 104 minutes of finished video. Spread across the 180-day validity window, consuming it requires generating roughly 35 seconds of video every day, for six months. At 720p without audio the figure is about 46 seconds daily; on the Turbo tier at 1080p (with audio) it’s about 28.

If your actual usage is a tenth of that, you have not paid $0.112 per second. You have paid $700 for ten minutes of video, and your real cost per second is ten times the list price. This is the number that should drive the decision for most small teams, and it appears in none of the top ten search results.

The per-second numbers, and why most articles quote them wrong

Nearly every comparison you’ll find states a single price for Kling 3.0 — $0.07, $0.10, and roughly $0.20 all appear on currently-ranking pages. All three are wrong, and not because they’re stale. They’re wrong structurally, because Kling 3.0 does not have a per-second price. The base model alone prices along three axes — resolution, native audio, and voice control — and “Kling 3.0” on the pricing page is actually three sibling SKUs (3.0, 3.0 Turbo, 3.0 Omni), each with its own grid:

The spread between the cheapest and most expensive cell is five times. Quoting one number from that grid isn’t a rounding error; it’s picking a cell and calling it the price. If a comparison tells you Kling costs $0.10/s, it has not told you what you’ll pay.

Runway’s API prices the same way in spirit but a different unit: credits, at $0.01 each. Gen-4 Turbo is 5 credits/second ($0.05/s), Gen-4.5 is 12 ($0.12/s). Those are directly comparable to Kling’s grid, because both are list prices per second of output from the vendor’s own documentation.

The one axis that compares cleanly

Modellix bills Kling on a different set of dimensions — mode (std/pro) and sound (on/off) — rather than resolution. That means you cannot line its numbers up against Kling’s resolution grid without knowing what resolution each mode produces, and the Modellix model page does not state that mapping. Comparing across mismatched tiers is exactly how the wrong-number problem above got started, so we won’t do it.

What does compare cleanly is the audio surcharge, because both vendors expose it as an independent axis:

Native audio costs about half again as much, wherever you buy it. Budget for it as a 50% premium, not a rounding difference.

One inference worth showing the working on. If std maps to 720P and pro to 1080P, the four cells line up like this:

Four independent cells converging on 15–16% would be an odd coincidence under any other mapping, so the mapping is probably that — but it’s inference from pricing, not documentation, and it should be treated that way.

The markup is not uniform across the catalog, though. Kling Avatar, which is priced as its own product on both sides, sits noticeably higher:

So “roughly 15% over list” is a reasonable planning assumption for the mainline video models and an understatement for Avatar. If avatar generation is the bulk of your workload, price it specifically rather than applying a blended figure.

Where that leaves us, stated plainly: on a per-second basis, buying Kling through Modellix costs roughly 15.5% more than Kling’s own list price, and Kling Avatar runs 21–25% higher rather than 15% — the markup is not uniform across models. Our own model pages don’t document the std/pro resolution mapping, which is a transparency gap on our side, not a subtlety. What the markup buys is the absence of the $700 commitment and the 180-day clock. Whether that trade is worth it is a volume question, and the last section works it out.

Where the two genuinely differ

Strip out price and the real distinction isn’t quality — it’s which model families you can reach and how much orchestration each gives you.

Kling’s catalog is deeper than the flagship. The comparison articles talk about “Kling 3.0” as though it were the product. It’s one endpoint among roughly forty, and the price spread across them is wider than the gap between the two companies. Listed on an aggregator, the Kling line runs from $0.0070/image on V1 text-to-image, through $0.032–$0.112/s across the V1.5 and V1.6 video generations, to $0.0970–$0.1940/s on V3, $0.15–$0.23/s on V3 Omni video, and $1.26/s for the video-effects endpoint — the full per-model Kling price list has all forty. If you’ve been pricing your project off a single Kling 3.0 figure, the model you actually need may cost a fraction of it — or ten times it.

Kling’s line is two parallel tracks, not one version ladder. Kling 3.0 and 3.0 Omni handle native 4K, native audio, and multi-shot sequences with character consistency. Kling Video O1 is a separate reasoning-enhanced track — its sibling image model, Kling Image O1, is described as “reasoning-enhanced,” and the video O1 endpoint is the video-side counterpart. Every competing comparison we checked treats “Kling 3.0” as the single current model; it isn’t. There’s also a naming trap worth flagging — the reasoning track is O1 on both the video and image lines (kling-video-o1, kling-image-o1). There is no “O3” anywhere in Kling’s lineup, so any page citing a “Kling Video O3” is describing a model that does not exist.

Runway has quietly become part aggregator. Its API doesn’t just sell Runway’s own Gen-4 family — a majority of the models on its published rate card come from other vendors:

So the framing of “a model maker versus an aggregator” doesn’t survive contact with the rate card. Runway is doing both, and the honest way to describe the market is that most of the serious platforms are converging on multi-vendor catalogs.

That matters practically. If your application needs to route between model families — Kling for one kind of shot, Veo 3.1 for another, something cheap for drafts — then you’re comparing multi-model platforms, and the axis to evaluate on is catalog coverage and unified billing, not whose flagship scores higher on a benchmark. It also means overlapping catalogs are now common enough that the same model can carry different prices depending on where you buy it: Seedance 2 at 1080p is $0.40/s through Runway, while the same Seedance line on an aggregator ranges $0.0805–$0.8970/s across its tiers. Comparing those two numbers directly would repeat the mistake this article has been arguing against — the tier definitions differ — but it does mean “which model” and “what it costs” have become separate questions.

What changes on July 30, 2026

Runway’s docs state it directly: “Gen-3 Alpha Turbo and Gen-4 Aleph are deprecated and will be officially sunset on July 30th, 2026.” That’s nine days from this article’s publication.

Two implications. First, if you have production code calling gen3a_turbo or gen4_aleph, you have a deadline. The migration targets are gen4_turbo (5 credits/s, same rate as the deprecated gen3a_turbo) and aleph2 (28 credits/s, up from gen4_aleph‘s 15). Second, and more relevant if you’re reading comparisons: a significant share of currently-ranking “Kling vs Runway” articles build their Runway recommendation on Gen-3 Alpha Turbo. Those recommendations expire this month.

While we’re on stale figures — several ranking pages cite a Runway “Unlimited” plan at $95. There is no Unlimited plan. Runway’s top individual tier is Max, at $76/month billed annually or $95 billed monthly, with 9,500 credits. The $95 figure is real; the plan name attached to it isn’t.

How to choose

The decision reduces to volume, with two thresholds.

If you’re a creator, not a developer, and Kling 3.0 in a web UI is all you need, stop reading comparison tables: Runway Creative’s $12/month plan (billed annually; $15 month-to-month) bundles Kling 3.0 with Runway’s own models, and it’s the lowest-friction way to use Kling short of Kling’s own consumer app. Nothing below applies to you — it’s about API integration.

For developers below roughly 100 minutes of Kling output per six months — most indie projects, prototypes, and early-stage products — Kling’s own API is the expensive option, not the cheap one, because the $700 package expires unused (the $98 trial buys you 30 days to test, not to ship). The realistic route is a pay-as-you-go aggregator that meters Kling’s endpoints with no commitment, at roughly 15% over Kling’s list rate. Runway’s API is not on the table here, because it doesn’t carry Kling.

For developers above that threshold, and rising — if you’ll reliably consume 5,000 units inside 180 days — direct from Kling becomes the cheapest per-second option, and the $700 stops being a risk. At 30,000 units the effective unit price drops to $0.126, a further 10% off. At that scale, a 15% aggregator markup is real money, and the argument for going direct is straightforward.

One gating check that sits above all of this: data residency. Kling is a Kuaishou model, and its developer platform operates from China — its API console carries a Chinese ICP license (京ICP备15023266号). If your organization can’t send user data to Chinese infrastructure, that constraint doesn’t care which channel you pick: calling Kling directly, or through an aggregator that forwards to Kling’s endpoints, both put the request on Kling’s infrastructure. In that case the honest answer is that Kling is off the table at any price, and the comparison you actually want is between Runway’s own US-hosted models and a Western model on an aggregator — a different article. Resolve this before you compare per-second rates, not after.

The case that doesn’t reduce to volume is multi-vendor routing. If your product calls Kling and Veo and something cheap for drafts, then per-model list price stops being the deciding factor — integration cost, one set of credentials, and one invoice dominate — which is why we rank the major multi-model video generation APIs on exactly those axes. Can I use Kling through Runway?

Does Kling’s API do audio generation?
