Short dramas run on three things: a vertical screen, a twist every minute, and a budget that would make a soap opera blush. AI now handles the first two and shrinks the third.

One scene is easy. A season is not: the same faces for 60 episodes, a hook in the first three seconds of each one, and a cost per episode that still leaves room for profit.

Here is why the format took off, how a 60-second episode is built, and what a season costs.

Three vertical AI short drama scenes generated with Seedance 2.0: confrontation, cliffhanger, and fruit drama

How we tested: every clip on this page was generated by our team through the API on Seedance, at 720p unless noted. Costs are the amounts actually billed per clip. All scenes are native 9:16.

Why AI Short Dramas Took Off

The numbers explain the gold rush. According to MIT Technology Review:

  • An average of 470 AI-generated short dramas were released every day in January, according to DataEye.
  • AI can cut the roughly $200,000 cost of a North American short drama by 80% to 90%.
  • Production that took three to four months can now take less than a month.
  • The global micro-drama market reached $11 billion in 2025 and is expected to hit $14 billion by the end of 2026.

Anatomy of a 60-Second AI Short Drama Episode

Time Beat Shots (5 s each)
0 to 3 s Hook: the slap, the reveal, or the line 1
3 to 45 s One dramatic beat, no subplots 8 to 9
45 to 60 s Cliffhanger, usually a push-in on a shocked face 2 to 3

Twelve shots, one beat, one cliffhanger. Open on the twist, explain it later; viewers decide to swipe in the first three seconds.

Copy any prompt below and try it yourself in the Seedance 2.0 T2V playground. Generated on Modellix: 5 seconds, 720p.

Short-drama confrontation

“Vertical short-drama scene, cinematic realism: in a modern glass office at night, a woman in a black blazer slides a signed contract across the desk and says, "You are fired, and so is your plan." The man freezes. Tense close-ups, dramatic side lighting.”

Try it

Short-drama cliffhanger

“Vertical short-drama cliffhanger: a bride opens the chapel doors and stops in shock as a man in a gray suit steps out of the crowd; slow push-in on her face, dramatic string music, soft golden light.”

Try it

AI fruit drama

“Vertical AI fruit drama in glossy 3D animation: an anthropomorphic strawberry in a tiny tuxedo dramatically confronts a nervous banana on a kitchen counter, exaggerated facial expressions, soap-opera zoom, comedic dramatic music.”

How to Write an AI Short Drama Production Brief

For each scene, give the model six things: location, character action, camera angle, emotion, the line of dialogue in quotes, and where the scene ends.

Vertical short-drama scene, 9:16, cinematic realism. Location: a modern glass office at night. Action: a woman in a black blazer slides a signed contract across the desk. Camera: tense close-ups. Emotion: cold triumph. Dialogue: "You are fired, and so is your plan." Ending: the man freezes.

Keep a cast sheet and paste each character’s description into every scene, so the heroine still looks like herself in episode 40.

How Much an AI Short Drama Season Costs

Unit Shots (5 s each) 720p on Seedance 2.0 With 30% retakes
One 60-second episode 12 $9.00 $11.70
One 90-second episode 18 $13.50 $17.55
30 episodes of 60 seconds 360 $270.00 $351.00

Our calculations from the per-second rates. A full 480p draft pass of those 30 episodes on Seedance 2.0 Fast costs about $108.

Free vs Paid vs API: AI Short Drama Generators Compared

Option Cost No watermark 1080p+ Commercial use Series-ready
Free apps $0 No No No No
Paid subscription apps About $10/mo+ Yes Yes Yes No
unified AI media generation API From $0.06/s Yes Up to 4K Yes Yes

Free apps

Kling’s free Basic plan and ByteDance’s Dreamina both hand out a small daily credit allowance, and both are genuinely fun for a first drama.

Kling’s own plan table is blunt about the catch: on Basic there is no watermark removal, no 1080p or 4K, and no commercial-use rights. Those arrive on the paid tiers. Dreamina likewise keeps watermark-free, campaign-ready downloads for paying members.

Free-tier catches

  • Watermark on every download. Fine for a group chat, a deal-breaker for a client or an ad account.
  • Capped resolution. Kling Basic has no 1080p or 4K, so your drama tops out below what feeds and TVs expect.
  • One clip at a time, in the slow lane. Free plans get one video per generation and no fast-track or unlimited queue. At peak hours a job can sit, stall halfway, and send you back to square one with fewer credits left.
  • A daily ration. A few clips a day will not fill a series, and a failed run eats into the same allowance.
  • No commercial rights. Anything made on the free tiers above cannot be sold, sponsored, or run as an ad.

Fine for posting one cliffhanger to your own account. A series needs hundreds of shots, no watermark, and commercial rights, and the free tiers offer none of the three.

Paid plans remove the watermark and allow commercial use (Kling’s Standard plan starts at $6.99, then $8.80 a month). The problem is volume: a season is hundreds of manual generations, and monthly credits run out long before the villain gets what they deserve.

An API

With a unified AI media generation API, you pay per generated second, keep full commercial rights, and call models from a playground or from code. Each scene in the script becomes a 9:16 request, so a whole episode can be submitted in one batch.

Seedance route Use it for Longest clip Top resolution Price per second
Seedance 2.0 T2V Final shots, best visual quality 15 s 4K $0.07 (480p) to $0.78 (4K); $0.15 at 720p
Seedance 2.0 Fast T2V Drafts and high volume 15 s 720p $0.06 (480p), $0.12 (720p)
Seedance 2.5 T2V Long single takes 30 s 1080p $0.103 (480p) to $0.569 (1080p)

Prices from the model pages. Billing is per generated second, with no subscription and no watermark.

Tips for generating efficiently through the API

  • Draft cheap, finish sharp. Find the shot on Seedance 2.0 Fast at 480p ($0.06/s), then re-render only the keepers at 720p or 1080p.
  • Close the tab, keep the job. Tasks run on the server. Submit, walk away, and poll the task ID later; nothing restarts because your browser did.
  • Pay for results, not errors. In our runs, failed tasks were not billed, so a rejected prompt costs a rewrite, not money.
  • Batch the shot list. Put one request per line in a JSONL file and run modellix-cli model batch to submit a whole episode at once.
  • Save outputs on completion. Result URLs expire about seven days after a task finishes, so download or copy them to your own storage right away.

Batch an AI Short Drama Season With Your Coding Agent

Once a style works, stop clicking. Paste this into Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor. One sentence and one API key are all your agent needs, and the same prompt scales from one clip to a full season.

My Modellix API key is mdlx-••••••••••••••••••••••••. Read https://docs.modellix.ai/get-started/index.md and https://docs.modellix.ai/bytedance/seedance-2-0-t2v.md, then use Seedance 2.0 T2V to generate one 5-second 9:16 vertical clip for each scene in episode-01.txt, pasting the same cast descriptions into every prompt. Poll each task until it finishes and save the MP4 files to ./episode-01.

Swap the masked key for your own from the Modellix console, and treat it like a password.

Prefer a skill or the terminal? Install the Modellix skill once and your agent finds the right model and fields by itself:

1
npx skills add https://github.com/Modellix/modellix-plugin --skill modellix

Or run one clip from the CLI:

1
2
3
4
5
6
npm install --global modellix-cli
export MODELLIX_API_KEY="your_api_key"

modellix-cli model run --model-slug bytedance/seedance-2.0-t2v \
--body '{"prompt":"Vertical short-drama scene: a woman slides a signed contract across the desk and says, You are fired.","ratio":"9:16","resolution":"720p","duration":5}' \
--wait --timeout 15m --quiet

Details live in the API, Skill, and CLI guides.
